Description

This photograph is an albumen print set on cardboard and enhanced with colours. It is attributed to one of the great names of 19th century photography in Japan, Felice Beato (1832-1909). This photograph shows the karamon gate of the Toshogu Shinto shrine in Nikkō. Toshogu is the mausoleum of the founder of the Tokugawa shogun dynasty, Tokugawa Ieyasu (1545-1616). This place is sacred in Japan, and has also been inscribed on the Unesco World Heritage List since 1999.
