Description

This photograph is an albumen print set on cardboard. It shows a view of Lake Chuzenji, the highest natural lake in Japan, which is located in the heart of the Nikkō Mountains. This place became popular during the Meiji era (1868-1912) and is still popular today, especially because of its hot springs and its proximity to the Nikkō shrines. A teahouse, chaya, a traditional entertainment establishment of the Edo period (1603-1868), is present in the background of the photograph.
