Description

Chuzenji Lake is located in the heart of the Nikkō Mountains. It was formed by a volcanic eruption and is the highest natural lake in Japan. The lake is part of Nikkō National Park, a historical and religious landmark of the country, which has been inscribed on the UNESCO heritage list since 1999. A torii is visible in the foreground of this photograph. This red-lacquered wooden gate, usually placed at the entrance of Shinto shrines, symbolically delimits the profane world from the sacred world of the shrine. The Chuzenji temple, named after the lake, is located along the lake’s eastern side. In the background of the photograph is Mount Nantai, a sacred mountain venerated since ancient times.
