Description

This photograph is a very beautiful portrait of a woman taken in a studio and hand coloured.

The woman is most certainly a Geisha 芸者 due to the fact that she plays shamisen 三味線. This instrument literally means “three fragrant strings”. It is played only sitting down, is plucked strings and has a square-shaped sound box.

Learning the shamisen is essential in the education of Geisha.
