This superb pair of painted vases was made between the end of the Warring States period (453-221 B.C.) and the Han Dynasty (206 B.C. – 220 A.D). Certainly placed in tombs to serve as funerary furniture, these pieces still bear the earth which is the proof of their burial. However, behind this clay, a fabulous colored decoration adorns this pair of terracotta. It consists of non-figurative motifs such as scrolls and triangles, frequently found on earlier and contemporary terracotta vases but also in bronze. Other interesting figurative motifs formed by a succession of colored ducks and stylized trees decorate the body of these vases. In the Chinese tradition the duck was the image of fidelity and happiness in the couple, so its presence on a pair reinforces this symbolism.<\/p>\n

Condition report:<\/strong><\/p>\n

The vases composing this magnificent pair do not present any structural anomaly. The heterogeneities of the terracotta allow however to identify some slight restorations at the level of the neck on one of the pieces. The polychrome decoration is still largely preserved, although it is partially covered with clay in some places.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
